The armchair according to Arne Norell: leather, wood, and precision

Full-grain leather, solid wood, comfort: discover how Arne Norell reinvented the Scandinavian armchair through a simple, artisanal and sustainable vision.

A discreet name, a strong mark

Swedish designer born in 1917, Arne Norell is one of those creators whose work established itself through coherence rather than spectacle. Little known internationally during his lifetime, his work began to receive growing recognition from the 1970s onwards, notably thanks to the reissues of his now-iconic pieces.

His approach to furniture combined Scandinavian rigor with an assumed search for comfort?warm, never ostentatious. Leather plays a central role: a structuring, expressive material, able to live, soften, and develop a patina without losing its essence.

Leather, a living material at the heart of his work

For Arne Norell, leather is not a simple covering. It structures the object. In several of his creations?armchairs, sofas, chairs?leather is stretched, suspended or strapped, sometimes hand-stitched, with almost architectural care. It is not decorative: it is structural.

The material used is most often full-grain leather, thick, with visible grain, selected for its ability to age gracefully. Natural shades (honey, cognac, brown) dominate, highlighting the patina of time. Far from uniform treatments, Norell chose leather for its visual honesty as much as for its mechanical qualities.

This demanding relationship with the material echoes his philosophy of furniture: an object must be at once beautiful, comfortable, and durable. Leather thus becomes a natural ally in this quest for balance.

The Inca armchair and other icons

The most emblematic model of Arne Norell?s work is undoubtedly the Inca armchair, designed in the 1960s. It rests on a wooden structure, often in elm or beech, on which a leather seat is stretched, suspended by a system of straps and metal buckles. No massive padding, but controlled suppleness, obtained through the natural tension of leather.

Other pieces follow the same principle, such as the Sirocco armchair?dismantlable, without screws, inspired by British campaign chairs?or the Ari armchair, where leather, steel, and floating cushions combine to offer enveloping comfort, with a sense of lightness.

In every case, the place of leather is central. Visible, assumed, tactile. It defines the soul of the furniture as much as its function. And each model is designed so that the leather evolves over the years without ever losing its essence.

A vision of comfort: tension and suppleness

Rather than multiplying foams or volumes, Norell conceived comfort as a play of controlled tension. Leather is essential: supple without being slack, firm without being rigid, it allows the body to settle naturally into the structure of the furniture.

Over time, the material relaxes slightly, takes on color, develops a patina. It tells a story of use, a discreet companionship between the object and its user. Comfort thus becomes a matter of loyalty rather than immediate effect.

This approach?less spectacular than other design movements?is what gives Norell?s pieces their quiet elegance. They do not seek to impress, but to endure.

A legacy still very much alive

Arne Norell?s creations are today reissued by the Norell Möbel house, following the original drawings and techniques. Several of his armchairs and sofas have become icons sought after by collectors, architects, and discerning enthusiasts of Scandinavian furniture.

This renewed appreciation comes from the quality of the materials?solid wood, full-grain leather, brass buckles?as well as the accuracy of the design. Norell?s design transcends trends. It relies on sober proportions, honest materials, and a strong relationship with time, use, and wear.

His work still influences many contemporary designers who seek to reconcile craftsmanship, comfort, and honest expression of materials.

At pib: a shared vision of the material

At pib, we share this demand: to offer pieces that are not content to be beautiful, but that live, soften, and accompany. Full-grain leather naturally has its place?for its nobility, patina, and ability to embody a discreet form of beauty.

Like Norell, we believe in furniture that withstands time, supported by the accuracy of its lines and the sincerity of its materials. An armchair, a sofa, a leather seat must be able to thrive in everyday life, not freeze it.

It is not about imitation, but inspiration: from a gesture, a philosophy, a respect for the material. And to honor, in our own way, this heritage of leather thought of as an art of living.
